1GW/8GWh! UK's Largest Battery Energy Storage System Announced
(Techritual September 9, 2025)
UK energy giant NatPower recently announced plans to construct the largest and most advanced battery energy storage facility in the UK, located in the Teesside region of Northeast England. This project, named Teesside GigaPark, represents an investment of up to £1 billion and is set to become a world-leading long-duration energy storage system.
Battery Capacity Reaches 1GW/8GWh
The Teesside GigaPark will feature a 1GW/8GWh energy storage system, making it not only one of the largest in the UK but also a global leader in long-duration energy storage. Unlike many current battery storage projects that offer 1-2 hours of storage duration, the GigaPark project will initially operate with a 4-hour storage capacity, with the potential to expand to 8 hours. This significantly enhances the grid's emergency response capability during periods of high demand. The core mission of the project is to store surplus electricity from renewable sources such as offshore wind power and release it back into the grid during peak demand. This innovative measure will not only help the UK improve the efficiency of renewable energy utilization but also provide robust assurance for national energy security and the stability of electricity supply.
Stefano DM Sommadossi, CEO of NatPower UK, stated, "Teesside GigaPark will serve as a blueprint for global port and industrial electrification. Within five years, we are confident in transforming this region into a powerful net-zero economy, and we will replicate this model worldwide." As one of the UK's most important industrial clusters, Teesside is poised to become a benchmark for global energy transition through this project. As the initiative progresses, Teesside will also emerge as a core hub for clean energy technology innovation across the UK and Europe.
